In vitro somatic embryogenesis (SE) from callus and in vivo nucellar embryony (NE) in ovule are two forms of asexual embryogenesis for citrus. SE has been widely used in biotechnology as a powerful way of regeneration and a model system for studying plant embryogenesis; whereas NE is an adventitious form of apomixis common in citrus which enables the fixation of desirable agronomic traits but impedes progress in cross breeding. In order to explore the controlling mechanisms of citrus SE and NE, using omics approach, we identify the related genes, proteins, miRNAs and biological processes, and manage to dissect the corresponding functions.
